FRAUD ALERT
Despite the declining use of checks in the U.S., criminals have been increasingly targeting the U.S. mail to commit check fraud. Authorities recommend that you avoid mailing checks and if you do, that you place them in a secure mail drop such as inside of a U.S. post office. Placing checks in your personal mailbox with a red flag up is not advisable, neither is placing in a blue mail collection box as they have been targeted for theft as well.

Travel Notification

Important

Before you leave, tell us when and where you’re traveling, as well as the Georgia Heritage cards you’ll be taking with you so that we can monitor your accounts appropriately. Contact us at 912-236-4400 to notify us of your travel plans.

Why You Should Notify Us Before Traveling

You’ve packed your suitcase, planned your itinerary, and checked into your flight. Surely you’ve done everything you need to prepare for your vacation, right?

There’s one small, but a crucial step that people often forget before traveling out of state: notifying their financial institution.

Notify Your Financial Institution Before Using a Credit or Debit Card When Traveling

Credit Unions do whatever they can to protect you from identity theft. But if you’re not careful, your credit union’s eagerness could backfire when you travel. If they spot transactions in an unfamiliar location, they may assume your card is being used fraudulently and shut it off.

When you let your credit union know that you’re going away, they add a note to your account and share it with their fraud detection system. This prevents your “abnormal” spending patterns from triggering a block on your card.

Other financial precautions to keep in mind when you travel

Notifying your financial institution about your travel plans is not the only financial precaution you should take. You should always have copies of your important documents and information, like their telephone number and your account numbers. If possible, bring more than one credit or debit card with you and stash one in a safe space outside your wallet in the event that your wallet is lost or stolen.
